If you’re at all familiar with Daymond’s story and how he built FUBU from the ground up, then you know that he still had a full-time job at a restaurant for a couple of years while he was running his business. While his hats and shirts were showing up on rap and hip-hop videos, he was splitting my time between sewing hats, filling orders, and waiting tables at Red Lobster.

How do you run a business while you have a full-time job? Well, you don’t get a lot of sleep. Daymond got up around 10:00 every morning to work on making hats, filling orders, sending orders to customers, and everything else that FUBU needed. Then he’d go to work at the restaurant till about midnight, and then he’d be up until 4:00 AM working on more orders.

That was Daymond’s life for about two years before he completely committed to his business and made it his one full-time job. It was hard at times, but he learned a lot about how to be an entrepreneur and the things you need to do to stay motivated and keep your eye on the prize. I think that every entrepreneur – whether you have another job or not – should take the time every morning to do a few things that will help you emotionally, physically, and professionally.

WAKE UP AND GET GOING

For two years, Daymond averaged about five to six hours of sleep a night so that he could take advantage of the most prime hours of the day to work on his business. It’s hard sometimes, but you know that it’ll make you feel better, and you’ll be less likely to skip working on it when you get home from your other job and you just want to sit on the couch for a while.

REMIND YOURSELF WHY YOU’RE DOING THIS

I won’t lie; it can be really hard to drag yourself out of bed sometimes and really get after your goals. However, you can make it a lot easier by reminding yourself what you’re working for. When your alarm goes off, instead of hitting snooze, open your eyes, take a deep breath, and think about your goals and what you’re going to do today to achieve them.

EAT BREAKFAST

Your brain is a muscle. Just like any other muscle in your body, it needs nourishment to work properly. So don’t skip breakfast. Even if it’s just a banana, a granola bar, or a bowl of cereal, grab something to munch on as you sip your morning coffee. You’ll feel more awake, alert, and ready to tackle the day’s challenges if you do.

PLAN YOUR DAY

And don’t just “get up and work on your business.” As you start moving, making coffee, and eating breakfast, make a concrete plan for the things you need to accomplish for your business. And don’t just make a to-do list. Instead, schedule how much time you’re going to spend on social media marketing, when you’re going to call clients to follow up on orders, etc. The more structured you make your work time, the more productive you’ll be.

Studies have shown that people – even people who hate mornings – have more willpower earlier in the day. You’re more likely to accomplish those tasks that you don’t really want to do if you do them earlier in the day, and you can look forward to more pleasant tasks later in the afternoon, too. Plus, once your business is up and running, think of all of the afternoons you’ll be able to take off to go do whatever you want after you handle all of your work in the morning.
