We all seem to know that one person who is happy all of the time, no matter what life has thrown at them. So, how do they do it? Chances are, they’ve probably adopted one powerful habit: smiling.
Did you know that smiling uses only 17 facial muscles, whereas frowning takes 43. Shouldn’t we all be smiling more? Smiling tends to be one of those habits that we often take for granted, but did you know that practicing the habit can make you more successful in life? Many successful entrepreneurs have learned the importance of smiling, and you should too. Start smiling every day, and you’ll be surprised to see how much more confident and attractive you appear!
Here’s a few reasons why you should smile every day.
1. SMILING IS FRIENDLY
Are you more willing to approach strangers who are smiling? Most likely the answer is “yes”. When you, or other people, are smiling it makes you feel more friendly and approachable. Whereas, it can be more difficult to want to talk to or approach someone who is scowling or grimacing. No one wants to approach someone who appears to be angry. A smile is the best way to brighten the mood and increase positive communication, even among strangers.
2. SMILING MAKES EVERYONE HAPPY
Whether or not others around you are smiling, if you flash someone a smile they will most likely smile back. Smiling is contagious! If you come across someone who is having a bad day, your one second of positive communication could lift their spirits and completely transform their day. There’s no better way to spread happiness than by smiling.
3. SMILING BOOSTS ATTRACTIVENESS
Smiling is a simple way to instantly make yourself appear more attractive to others. In a study completed by Orbit Complete they found that 66% of men and 73% of women believe that a smile makes you more attractive than if you were wearing makeup. Smiling is the easiest way to look and feel beautiful.
4. SMILING HELPS YOU LIVE LONGER
Want to know the secret to a longer life? Smiling. Wayne State University conducted a study on professional baseball players. They studied the player’s headshots from the 1952 season and found that those players who were smiling lived an average of 79.9 years. On the other hand, the players who weren’t smiling lived an average of 72.9 years, 7 years less than their smiling counterparts. It just goes to show that smiling every day could actually help you live longer!
5. SMILING IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH
Along the same lines as living longer, smiling is also good for your health. Do you find yourself feeling stressed or overwhelmed often? Smiling is an easy way to decrease stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenalin, which leads to lower blood pressure. At the same time, smiling also works to increase endorphins, making you happier and more prepared to face the challenges of everyday life.
6. SMILING INCREASES CONFIDENCE
There is nothing worse than putting months of preparation into a speech only to step out on stage and have your confidence completely disappear. One of the best ways to gain your confidence back is to smile! Smiling will not only make you appear more confident, but it will make you feel more confident. Smiling will help you conquer anything with confidence!
Have you smiled today?
