5 Tips to Achieving a Good Work-Life Balance

This surprises some people, but Daymond didn’t start FUBU so that he could become the CEO of a multimillion-dollar company. He started it so that he could afford to go on tour with his friends who were rappers and dancers. He did it because he wanted a work-life balance that let him play as hard as he worked, and he worked really hard to get there.

He’s maintained the same philosophy throughout his career investing in other entrepreneurs’ ventures because, at the end of the day, a good balance between work that he loves and time with his family and friends is all that really matters. So, how does he maintain that balance?

KEEP NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS

At every stage of the game with FUBU, Daymond treated his business like a full-time job. He got up early in the morning and worked hard all day on it. When he was still working a full-time job in a restaurant, he did work a lot of late nights, but once he had established the brand to the point where he could quit his job, he transitioned from working around his other job to working regular business hours. He kept himself from burning out by keeping pretty strict office hours.

MAKE YOUR BEDROOM A NO-PHONE ZONE

On that note, don’t use your phone as an alarm clock, and don’t sit in bed catching up on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and emails. Having your phone next to you in bed makes it way too easy to check work emails in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning before you make your coffee. Believe it or not, it can wait until after you’ve gotten dressed and poured your first cup of coffee in the morning.

DELEGATE, DELEGATE, DELEGATE

At some point, you can’t do it all yourself. You only have 24 hours in the day, and you’re going to need to give up a few of those for sleeping and eating. Not only that, but sacrificing all of your recreational time to tasks that you can easily hire someone else to complete is going to drag you down and burn you out faster than you might think.

As soon as your company can support it (or as soon as you get investor funding to do it), start hiring and/or contracting help for your business. The time you save on these tasks will be much better spent talking with investors and new clients and on building your brand.

PRIORITIZE SOCIAL AND RECREATIONAL TIME

You already know that you have to be your own boss and that you have to make yourself do the tasks you don’t necessarily want to do sometimes. You also have to be the boss who says, “Go home, already!” when you’re working late and banging your head against a wall that won’t move until you’ve had some quality rest and relaxation. Some entrepreneurs actually schedule social and recreational time into their workweeks to keep themselves from going overboard on work and missing out on other important things in life.

GET ENOUGH EXERCISE

Finally, schedule some exercise into your day at least five days a week. It doesn’t have to be much, and it doesn’t have to be strenuous. Just walking for 30 minutes a day can keep your weight down, your heart healthy, and your mind sharp. Regular exercise can do wonders for your outlook, which can do amazing things for your business.

Follow these tips to maintain a good work-life balance, and you might notice some pretty surprising things, including more work satisfaction and better business growth.
